Hemp Farming Runs in Our Blood

Kia ora everyone,

One of the things I have been grateful for during isolation is connecting more with people on video calls. I’ve had regular chats with grandparents on both sides of my family, and have been really thankful that New Zealanders have been so conscientious when dealing with COVID-19 and lockdown to help keep them safe and alive. Matt and I are lucky to still have eight grandparents with us today!

Farming runs in our blood, although the hemp element is a new addition. My Grandpa grew up in Methven and left high school at 16 to start agricultural contracting planting swedes, before buying his own farm. Their four children were born on the farm before Grandpa went to University to study commerce. Matt’s Grandad has been a Te Kuiti based farmer all his life. They had six children grow up on their farm – the oldest being my mother-in-law, Maria. Their guidance, interest and general support for Matt in Hemp farming in original and innovative ways has been an awesome way to connect with our family farming history.

A really fun (and revealing) thing to do with your grandparents is talk about the differences between hemp and marijuana, as you can probably imagine the level of misconception is all over the show & the conversation goes in all sorts of crazy ways; you might even find out if your grandparents enjoyed a puff or two of Mary-Jane back in the day– disclaimer: mine haven’t!

If you need some detail regarding the difference between the two; check out this article so you really know what you’re talking about!

Cheers

Em xx
