Playing Lockdown Games & Eating Hemp Snacks
Kia ora everyone,
During the course of levels 3 & 4, we have had two birthday parties in the flat, with multiple exciting birthday deliveries including cakes made by friends and families to share the love even though we can’t all celebrate with our families.
This last weekend we celebrated Matt’s birthday by making up our own game combining elements of True American (from the TV show New Girl) and Pokémon. Everyone dressed up as Pokémon or Pokémon trainers and we really got in touch with our inner child which was so much fun! We really were throwing back.
It is interesting to reflect on how we keep ourselves entertained when we see each other every day. Ordinarily, a party would involve catching up with friends, having a few drinks and mostly talking! However, because there is almost nothing left to talk to each other about (we are all very up to date with how the rest of the bubble are going physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually), we have had to find other inventive methods of fun. This whole experience has reminded me how valuable and important it is to just play.
Playing games is wonderful for your mental health – thinking creatively, being competitive, following rules and working together are all really important aspects of our worlds, and it is so good for your brain to practise those skills in different ways. Whether it be on a monopoly board, in a galaxy far far away, or in our case; a life sized ludo board where the ground was lava!
Obviously an important element of any games is great snacks! One of the winning recipes we have been using to keep our sugar levels high while reliving our childhood memories has been Hazel’s hemp slice sprinkled with hemp so we can trick ourselves into thinking it is mildly healthy. That is certainly something I have really loved about lock down – being playful, eating sugar and just getting back in touch with what is really important; remembering how good it is to just sit and play with your friends!
Cheers
Em
