Curing My 'Reverse Culture Shock'
Curing My Reverse Culture Shock
Hello everyone,
Over the weekend I finally got to go and have dinner with my parents – it has been so great to hear stories of people re-connecting, which makes everything feel a little bit closer to “normal”. While it has been really exciting moving back down the levels; I am getting a bit nervous going back to work, going out into town, hitting up Mitre 10 and now, going back into a bar!
A few of us have been talking about this thing called “reverse culture shock” which essentially describes how some of us might be feeling returning to the way things were. Many of us have got rather used to working from home in our trackies, knowing where everyone in your house is at all times and staying within the comforts of our own houses. Stepping back into the chaos of life – with traffic, increased spending on food, face to face contact with other work colleagues and just the general busyness that we find ourselves in can be relatively confronting. I suppose the big “so what” of our discussion was; it is totally okay to feel this way. Change is challenging, but change to work, life and our social behaviour, is even more consuming.
The best thing to do is be grateful for what we can do, and my personal trick; eat food that makes you feel good! This was one of the most comforting meals we had this week – Kumara soup with hemp and kumara bread. It was so yummy and warming and I ate so much bread, I fell asleep into a food coma that night.
Take care everyone, & enjoy some food-induced sleeps!
